The first sports betting association and Illinois immediately recalled the 1919 “Black Sox” scandal in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. While the eight were declared free in court in 1921, then-Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned them from playing baseball. Joe Jackson’s “Shoeless” ban remains a point of contention as it also includes removal from consideration to the Hall of Fame.
Another legendary Chicago figure, gangster Al Capone, is reported to have run sports books during the ban era and has a dog racing track called the Hawthorne Kennel Club to visit pisauqq.
On a positive note, Illinois could claim the inventor of the point of distribution. Charles K. McNeil, a former bank securities analyst, developed a formula for evaluating football teams in the 1940s and estimating how many points a favorite would lose. While McNeil called it a “wholesale opportunity” at the time, it was later known as the point of spread and revolution of the sports betting industry at the time and put it more in line with what we know today.
Illinois already has a good location with 10 existing casinos and acknowledges its growth potential in capital law by providing a potential racetrack to add racino and sportsbook to the mix. In addition, Governor Pritzker’s Executive Order expedited the schedule for online sports betting in the state, many benefits for casinos and better bettors.
Tack on the possibility of Sportsbooks in iconic places like Wrigley Field and United Center, plus potential casinos in downtown Chicago and locations throughout northern Illinois that could pull off the Wisconsin market, and Lincoln Land is ready to remove the sleeping part of the moniker “sleeping giant” when it comes to sports betting in the coming years.
